GRAMMAR: “I WISH…” TO EXPRESS WISHES

A lovely moment in the film is when Jackie talks with Ruby about their intimate feelings in a mum-and-daughter conversation.
Ruby asks her mum, “Do you ever wish I was deaf? '' highlighting the communication problems between deaf parents and their CODA children.
In English, the formula I WISH PLUS A COMBINATION OF VERB TENSES
expresses wishes for our future or complaints.
I WISH + SIMPLE PAST expresses a wish in the present or in the future.
Example: “I wish I was taller”.
