The children on the picture are students. These children GO TO SCHOOL every day. They ARE AT SCHOOL now.

In English, we say children GO TO SCHOOL because we aren’t thinking of a specific school. We are thinking about school as a general idea (children learning together in a class). We don’t use the article THE.

Some specific words follow the same rule: work, home, prison, church, home, university...
