What We Did on Our Holiday. Premiere

Media:

One of the virtues of British cinema is that it dominates the genre of comedy very well. The witty scripts and actors of these films are not just entertainment. They also add reflection, criticism, and ideas. What we did on our Holiday belongs to this type of comedy where there is fun, but also raises questions about some aspects of the adult world in contrast to the children world. With simplicity and sincerity, the children of the story leave speechless adults and irritate and confront them many times. They always act in complicity with the audience, who is captivated by the children witty and funny remarks.

Doug (David Tennant) and Albi (Rosamund Pike) is a couple with three children which is getting a divorce. They have to go to the Scottish Highlands for a few days, as it is the birthday of the grandfather (Billy Connolly) who suffers from terminal cancer. They have to pretend that life is normal. However, the relaxing days eventually become a war between grown-ups, where the disagreements and grudges humorously emerge in each scene.

So, the grandpa decides to get away and takes his grandchildren to his favourite beach. He is the only character able to bring some rationality and wisdom to the chaos of the adults. He understands the children world and influences them in their perception of things. Moreover, when he dies, the children will fulfill his last wish. This fantasy will precisely be what causes the family to have a catharsis and force them to smooth over differences.

Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin have directed a movie with a simple and ingenious plot that is plenty of intelligent humor. The story has lovely photographs of the Scottish landscape and a splendid group of actors very close to the audience play it. Although the end is too smooth and predictable, it does not detract from about 95 minutes of good comedy.
