Venus in Furs, a new film by Roman Polanski

All those of us, who have followed Roman Polanski since his inception, intuit in advance that, in this new film, there will be the recurrent themes we find in his previous work. But we cannot fail to admire the flawless manner he has to express them. Once again, as it happened in Carnage, a film adaptation from a text by Yasmina Reza, The Venus in Furs is also an adaptation from a play by David Ives. This story helps the director as a framework for communicating one of his obsessions: the relationship of power that any love relationship creates, the ways the dark intricacies of desire follow, and the search for transgression and for own reaffirmation that happens at the other expense.
But, as he did in his previous film, Polanski has distanced himself from his obsessions. It allows him to satirize and laugh at himself. The result is a smart, funny, witty and disturbing film where the verbal confrontations and mutual challenges link together with such a subtle elegance that the audience hardly realize that the roles reverse so that the dominant person becomes the dominated one.
Only two actors, Mathieu Amalric and Emmanuelle Seigner, with a smart ingenuity perform four characters who jump from the fiction play where they are acting to the text of the reality of the moment. They make, in a unique setting and with only two characters that the audience do not want to miss a single detail of what is happening.
This is a film that mesmerizes from its magnificent and beautiful first scene which is recovered again in the final shot, like a book that opens and does not close until the interesting story that holds within its pages is not over.
