The Great Beauty, a beautiful but perfectly controlled chaos

Media:

"Everything is concealed under the idle chatter and noise: silence and feelings, emotion and fear, decay, misfortune and the miserable man." This is one of the many phrases that, voice-over and looking for the spectator's complicity, the protagonist conveys to the audience. Nothing is easier for us than to identify with the beauty of images and the intelligent and lucid phrases that we hear in the film. Sometimes they are surreal, other times symbolic, but they are always suggestive, hypnotic and have an added value because the story is able to fill the screen with a beautiful but perfectly controlled chaos without following a classical structure. So, in the blink of an eye, the camera can move from the noisiest and most ordinary place to the serene and sublime space; from the frenetic movement of the characters to the calm of the beautiful sculptures; from the most absolute vacuity to transcendence and existential reflection. The mysterious and wonderful Rome is the backdrop for these contrasts and witness to the decadence of what remains when there is nothing left.

The actor Toni Servillo, who once again demonstrates that there is no range or gender can resist him, is Jep Gambardella, a journalist who has charmed and seduced his way through the lavish nightlife of Rome for decades. Since the success of his first and only novel, he has been a permanent fixture in the city's literary and social circles. Now, after his 65th birthday, he decides to dedicate his time to the search of a meaning and finds himself unexpectedly taking stock of his life, turning his cutting wit on himself and his contemporaries.

Few films accomplish to connect all their elements in the perfect way it does. From the actors to photography, dialogues and music, everything is so elegant and poetically assembled that we can classify it as a small work of art.
