Ricki and the Flash. Meryl Streep is a Hard-Rock Singer

Media:

I have no doubt when I say that director Jonathan Demme (Philadelphia, The Silence of the Lambs, and a pioneer in filming concerts) has fully been right to choose Meryl Streep to star this movie.

At her 65, the versatile actress makes credible her role as a rock-and-roll parochial singer. Her omnipresence fills the screen and rises up a torrent of tenderness and energy impossible to elude. With her splendid performance Meryl, it could not be otherwise, also compensates for some faults of the script.

Ricki is a woman who has decided to make real her dream of becoming a famous rock-and-roll star. To do this, she has broken social conventions and abandoned her family. After a day's work as a cashier, she devotes her free time to perform music at a bar for a mix of different people. One day, she gets a call from her ex-husband informing her that their daughter has fallen into a severe depression. So, she decides to take a break and go to her aid. Day after day, she will start recovering the love of her children. With her easy behaviour and affection, she manages to silence the words and looks of reproach that she receives. She will also be aware of the gap that her absence has left in the life of her family.  At the same time, she will be conscious of the failure in her career since she has not managed to become the famous star she dreamed.

At all times, the audience empathizes with all the characters emotions and feelings, with their joys, miseries and vital reality. Although the film presents a series of uncomfortable family situations with a well-balanced combination of dramatic and funny moments, they lead to a prim and unnatural happy ending, I think.
