Paradise Premiere, by Ulrich Seidl

Paradise: Love (Paradies: Liebe), the first delivery of a trilogy that deserves attention.

With the first delivery of his film Paradise: Love, Ulrich Seidl, its director, is announcing us a trilogy that deserves attention.

Starting from an excellent directing job and refined aesthetics in the combination of colours, shapes and photography, the film deals with themes that will be as attractive to some people as uncomfortable for others.

The director uses the camera with good taste and in an honest way, showing the story within the boundaries of decorum, with neither tricks nor dogmatism. Without taking pleasure on morbid curiosity, Seidl dares with two complicated and somewhat taboo topics: loneliness and lack of affection experienced by some women beyond a particular age and sex tourism created around it.

Teresa (Margaret Tiesel's magnificent performance) is a woman in her 50s. She lives with her teenage daughter who does not know how to return her mother's love. Determined to break with her everyday life, Teresa embarks on a journey to Kenya where she has the chance to become a "sugar mummy", a name given to a woman of age who, in exchange for love/sex, ensures a wage to a young handsome boy. But she, who primarily seeks love and affection, will feel dissatisfaction with all these relationships and will understand that these young boys are not there to give love but to receive money or material goods, even though they have to go through some moments of humiliation and almost slavery. Eventually, the protagonist will experience more loneliness than ever and will have to accept that her age and her body do not fit in with the standard set by fashion.

The movie tackles some situations in a humorous way to start with, but as the story progresses the humour disappears and a great sadness and desolation substitute it, just because the work shows a double painful reality and it is very difficult to remain indifferent.
