My skinny sister, a healthy rivalry

Media:

Lenken Sanna, director of the film, knows the eating disorders very well since she suffered them firsthand throughout her adolescence. She does not illustrate the issue with a causes/consequences perspective. The movie shows the point of view of Stella, an 11-years-old girl who feels a great admiration for Katja, her older sister. Katja is her model of perfection but suffers a serious bulimia/anorexia problem. Stella is afraid of talking to anyone about what she sees, as her sister intimidates her with exposing her private diary, and even with committing suicide if she says something. So, the young girl silently suffers Katja's self-destruction without having the necessary maturity to face the situation. To the usual problems any teenager bears, Stella has to add those caused by her sister, and a mix of contradictory feelings as jealousy, love, betrayal and fear break out.

Unable to manage this flood of emotions, Stella finally decides to leave her role as a mere spectator and takes an active attitude. Her first step will be explaining the process Katja is living to her parents. They are shocked and disoriented when Katja refuses to be treated by a specialist and decide to tackle the problem alone. It will be a wrong decision since the matter to confront will be very severe and will just tear apart and divide the own family. However, the successful exit will come from Stella again. Frightened by her sister extreme situation, she will do everything she can to achieve a position which stabilizes the family.

Award winner at several festivals, the film manages to talk about eating disorders in an honest, warm and touching way, without relinquishing the rigor the subject requires.

We must emphasize the excellent performance Rebecka Josephson, the younger sister, plays. She is an actress the director discovered when she already started to think it would not be possible to find any teenager who could fit the script
