Kanimambo. Three different stories with a common denominator.

Media:

The continent is too large to describe. It is a veritable ocean, a separate planet, a varied, immensely rich cosmos. Only with the greatest simplification, for the sake of convenience, can we say 'Africa'. In reality, except as a geographical appellation, Africa does not exist.

Ryszard Kapuściński (The Cobra's Heart)

Kanimambo means "thank you" in Shangana, one of the languages spoken in Mozambique. It is a way to thank this country and its people all the three directors of the film learned while travelling and shooting.

Three different stories that correspond to the glances of three different directors with a common denominator: simplicity, keen eye for detail and authenticity, besides their characters: everyday heroes who fight for a better life.

In Custodio, the first story, directed by Abdellatif Hwidar, we witness the close and tender relationship between a father and his son. The child, a minor, has to take care of his ailing father and deal with their livelihood. We know further details on the country health system when the father is in hospital.

Madalena, the second story directed by Carla Subirana, looks at the role of women in the country. These women are real fighters who try to overcome their precarious everyday existence. The director, with a great deal of sensitivity, shows their different points of view.

Joana, the final story, shows the plight in which a couple of disabled people lives: a deaf girl and a blind singer. The sharpness of its director, Adam Aliaga, to dignify every detail, fills the entire story.

Three realities of a country ravaged by a war of independence, a subsequent civil war, great poverty and diseases. It is a country that fortunately begins to show some slow signs of recovery.
