In Another Country. Three Different Characters In One Only Actress

Media:

It is always a risk to summarize the plot of a movie which looks for innovation, does not follow the classic structure of beginning, middle and end, and has a nonlinear narrative.

Fleeing economic problems, a girl and her mother arrive in Mohang port (South Korea). To fill the tedious hours they have to spend, the daughter decides to write a screenplay where three women, who are going through different situations, stay for some days in that coastal village. The three women are called Anne and are played by Isabelle Huppert.

The first woman will be a well-known filmmaker who is self-confident and firm in her convictions. The second one will play a married woman who comes to meet her lover, a Korean film director; her personality will be hesitant and somewhat insecure. The third one represents a wealthy person who has been left by her husband; she is disoriented and looking for answers to her questions.

Thus, the three women live different situations even though they are in similar contexts and meet the same characters. Although dialogues, scenes and motives, are repeated, on one hand there are always some slight hints that make them different and, on the other hand, some subtle games that relate them.

Under the guise of simpleton conversations, the screenplay has the ability to capture those chance encounters that help the characters escape from their pressing loneliness.

The movie shows a disenchanted vision with human relationships, mainly with the love ones. And Isabelle Huppert, with a praiseworthy performance, is the actress who leads us through this difficult set of mirrors.

However, it's a slow paced film, and in some scenes there is a lack of more precise nuances in the characterization of each woman. As everything that goes out of the ordinary, it will probably have as many advocates as detractors.
