Boychoir. A Real Pleasure for the Senses

Media:

Art, specifically music, is used as a mean for channeling antisocial behavior of young. On the big screen, we have had occasion to see it recently with Whiplash (2014) and some time ago with The Chorus (2004). Now with a simple and unsentimental plot except for a too happy final, Boychoir tells the story of Stet, an 11-year-old boy from Texas whose single and the almost alcoholic mother dies in a car accident.

Stet, rebellious and defiant, has amazed her music teacher for his beautiful voice. The father, following her advice, decides to intern him at a prestigious music school on the East Coast. Stet will have to learn to adapt to an elitist environment based on strict discipline that does not believe in him. Enthusiastic about his singing lessons, his tenacity and strong desire to be recognized will awake the interest of Carvelle (Dustin Hoffman), the choir director.Carvelle is hard with the students but sympathetic to their problems. So, he will work for Stet to leave his problematic behaviour and focus on getting the post of a soloist. Finally, they will establish a smooth relationship. It will reach such a degree of complicity that not only will affect the life of the young but also will require the director to review his own life.

The screenplay is rich in nuances. Its primary purpose is not analyzing the process by which a child with problems of integration achieves to become a recognized soloist, but to move us through the various classical pieces that are played in many scenes. We will see how children with voices aspiring to be the best on the planet learn. We will partake in his vitality and energy, both when affection and solidarity win as when envy and infighting appear. Above all, the story rewards the efforts and discipline of a whole school team that follows very clear objectives.
