Beasts Of The Southern Wild

Media:

It is an independent film that has a limited budget. Its main value lies in the quality of the images, the performance of the characters and the freshness of the theme rather than in its thematic coherence. Narrative gets lost at times and the viewer can have the impression of not certainly knowing what the director wants to tell us, but this does not seem to care Benh Zeitin. He has said: "I want to fill my life and films with adventurers, courageous and good-hearted people. It does not matter whether it is a chaos and everything gets out of control. I invent a reality and fill it with people". The result is a story in an alternative universe and an unusual community that lives in this strange place.

The real scene locates in Louisiana, in a marshy area of the Mississippi meanders. In the middle of this wild nature, surrounded by dense woods and separated from civilization by a dike, a group of people live without any government or contact with the outside world. The little protagonist is among them. She will have to deal with a hostile and uncaring father whose life reduces to avoid any responsibility.

When a whopping storm along with a rise in temperature breaks the order of this universe, everything will become menacing. A vast flood will swamp the entire area and prehistoric creatures will threaten the lives of people. Her father also falls ill. Then she will have to accept that not everything fits properly in this life and that a single degree of mismatch can break the whole balance. For getting back in harmony with nature and overcoming all fears that the disaster carries, she will have to reinvent herself.

Somewhat uneven film whose first part presents more emotional and visual interest than the second one, but this is compensated for by the natural charisma of the little girl and her courage to move forward.
